BOYS BASKETBALL: St. Joseph used an 11-0 run toward the end of the third quarter to build a slim lead Saturday night against Notre Dame, and then the Chargers sealed the game from the free-throw line in the final period. Paul Turner hit all eight of his attempts from the charity-stripe, including six in the fourth quarter, and St. Joseph claimed a 66-60 nonconference victory in Niles.

WRESTLING: Maine South’s Terry Calkin took third place at 120 pounds in the Glenbard North Sectional on Saturday while Niles North’s Camerin Pascoe finished fourth at 220 pounds. Both wrestlers advance to next weekend’s State Finals at University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall in Champaign.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Jewell Loyd gave her fans two huge thrills Friday. Loyd’s 42 points pushed visiting Niles West to a 52-48 overtime victory over No. 24 Glenbrook South that secured the outright CSL South championship, and her 30th point was No. 3,000 in her four-year career.

It took almost the entire period, but David McCoy completed an amazing rally when he hit the front end of a one-and-one with three seconds left to give the Wolves a dramatic 45-44 Central Suburban South victory in Glenview.

Two-time defending state champion Carmel remained on target for another state title, winning the sectional with 151.760 points, while Stevenson mustered 146.875 points to finish as runner-up.

WRESTLING: Maine South junior Terry Calkins is an accomplished veteran of IHSA postseason wrestling, and his demeanor and results reflect that experience. The 120-pounder, who reached the Class 3A state tournament as a sophomore, looks well on his way to a return after his dominant performance at Saturday’s Niles West Regional, where he defeated Elk Grove’s Joe Hauser 12-3 in the title match.
