Letter to the editor: Garbage transfer station fight was Democracy in action
Updated: October 5, 2012 3:52PM
The latest incident with the garbage-transfer-station owner deciding to withdraw his request is a great example of what happens when people get together.
This was Democracy at its finest in action. People rallying for a cause.
Last time I remember this happening was in the 1950s, when a developer wanted to put up condos where the stables are on Harms. The board was ready to approve the plan. We all got together to attend a board meeting at the council chambers above the fire station. The room was packed and people were standing on the stairs. The overflow was in the fire-house garage.
We were all younger then and all fired up. Most of the guys were veterans. The board members might have envisioned tar and feathers.
Bottom line: They turned down the developer.
Folks, keep up the good work. Get involved. That’s how you get good government.
