Letter to the editor: Tree fee unfair to property owners

Updated: March 29, 2012 3:36PM

[Editor’s note: Trustees at the March 12 village board meeting voted down a proposal to require a $75 permit fee before chopping down a tree with a diameter of 10 inches as measured at a height of 4.5 feet from the ground.]

There are several problems with a proposal by Trustee Sheldon Marcus, as reported in the Champion.

This ordinance, if passed, would cost us $75 if we wanted to cut down a tree on our own property.

This is one more government intrusion we don’t need or want. It’s my property and as long as I don’t hurt anyone I could paint my house purple with yellow stripes and the government has no business requiring me to do or not do something.

Additionally, some narrow-minded people might look at this as just an additional way to tax us.

Looking at my latest tax bill, I say enough is enough. Hopefully the board will reject this proposal.
