Utility companies offer residents new resources

Updated: July 25, 2012 8:57AM

At this time last year the village, along with many other Illinois communities, experienced several severe storms that caused power outages for long stretches of time.

As a result of those outages Commonwealth Edison created an outage-alert program, which now allows residents to report outages via a simple text message. Subscribers to the system can text the word “OUT” to 26633 (COMED) to report an outage at the location ComEd has associated with the cell-phone number.

Once notified, ComEd will provide regular updates on the status of their outage until service is restored. In order to subscribe, customers will need either the ComEd account number, the account holder’s Social Security number or the primary phone number on the account. To learn more about Outage Alerts, go to ComEd.com/text. Additional information is available on the village’s website, www.mortongroveil.org under “Village News.”

Nicor Gas is also offering new things to its customers. The company has a new website, www.nicorgas.com, which provides convenient customer-service features, as well as easily accessible information about payment options, natural gas safety and gas costs. There is also an energy-efficient program that offers cash rebates for the purchase and installation of certain high-efficiency equipment.

Since this is the season for home repairs and construction, homeowners are reminded to call J.U.L.I.E. before digging. J.U.L.I.E. serves as a free message-handling notification service for underground-utility owners.

Dial 8-1-1 before digging or excavating and J.U.L.I.E. will coordinate locating the utilities in your area before you dig.
