Metra upgrades will include power outlets on passenger cars

Updated: October 24, 2012 10:09PM

Metra is adding power outlets on its trains so riders can charge their computers and phones.

The upgrades are part of the commuter rail agency’s rehab of 176 passenger cars that were built between 1995 and 1998. Forty cars are done so far and 60 should be done by the end of the year.

Doors will now have new sensitive edges like elevator doors so they’ll open if they come in contact with a person or object in the way.

The cars also will get new toilets and bathrooms, wheelchair lifts, and new floors and seats.

The cars are being restored to “like new” condition, officials said Tuesday.
