Hundreds of Chicago’s young arts supporters will gather for a high-energy evening of music, dancing, cocktails, impressive local cuisine and a silent auction to benefit Steppenwolf for Young Adults, the theater’s nationally recognized arts education program which annually impacts over 15,000 students, teachers and families. North Shore Congregation Israel Fundraiser: 7 p.m. April 17, North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe. Supporting the 2012 Jewish United Fund-Israel Emergency Fund. The event will feature basketball star Tamir Goodman, who first gained notoriety as the kippah-wearing standout at Townson University in Maryland. Dubbed by Sports Illustrated as the “Jewish Jordan,” Goodman played six professional seasons in Israel for some of the most competitive teams. As a soldier in the Israel Defense Forces, he was awarded the “Outstanding Soldier Award” for his service specializing in armored personnel carriers. Kick Start the Ride for “Operation Route 66” Fundraiser: 5:30-8:30 p.m. April 19, Columbia Yacht Club, 111 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Local photographers and founders of Gerber + Scarpelli photography are using their talents to help tell the story of Middle East war veterans on a project that they are embarking on in May called “Operation Route 66,” to give a light to some of the forgotten war veterans of our generation. The duo founded 41 Degrees North Productions, as a nonprofit documentary film to help others. To help fund the $140,000 for production and travel costs, the duo is hosting “Kick Start the Ride” a benefit to help get Operation Route 66 on the road. Mundelein Seminary Hosts An “Evening of Tribute” honoring Reverend Robert E. Barron and Mr. & Mrs. Michael Winn: April 19 Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, Chicago. The Francis Cardinal George “Christo Gloria” Award will be given to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Winn as recognition for “living the tenets of the Catholic faith so that family, friends, colleagues and the wider community benefit from their Christian spirit of justice, wisdom and charity.”  They participate on the Big Shoulders Board, the Willows Academy Board; and they provide invaluable support for Catholic Relevant Radio, FOCUS, and the Thomas More Law Center among many others.  They have been married for over 50 years and they have eight children, 56 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Chicago Botanic Garden Antiques & Garden Fair/Fundraiser: April 19 (preview night), April 20 thru April 22. While 24 display gardens bloom outside, more than 100 displays from dealers from Europe and the United States showcase the best in antique garden furnishings, botanical art and home and garden design. Two speakers will give lectures during the Fair: David Easton at 11 a.m. on April 20 and David Howard at 11 a.m. on April 21. Complimentary floral arrangement demonstrations will be given on Saturday and Sunday at designated booths at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Indoor display gardens will interpret the theme “Around the Garden Table” and will be donated and installed by premier landscape designers. From calendar items and invitations (by mail or e-mail) I decide which events to cover. [Full disclosure: I like fashion, so I hit more fashion shows and shopping events than galas] Sometimes I assign Trend columnists to various events, but many times, they receive their own invitations.

Since there are more events on the social calendar than we can possibly attend, chairwomen need to provide a post-event press release and high-resolution photographs (with full names and hometowns) of guests. Please include your photographer’s name so we can give proper credit.

We no longer assign photographers to events we don’t cover. Many guests have cameras on their cell phones, and we’re happy to accept those images. — Meg Moore
