Benefits

Golfers “swinging for a cure”: will take to the links Sept. 10 at the Bob Chinn’s 10th Annual Charity Golf Outing. The awards dinner immediately following golf will be specially-catered by the world-famous Bob Chinn’s Crab House and benefitting the Leukemia Research Foundation. Home School Information Night for Parents: 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 9. If you have made the decision to home school, or if you are exploring the concept, this evening of information will be helpful to you. Library staff will share how to take advantage of our resources, and a home school panel will discuss Illinois law, different educational approaches, support groups, and more.

Kindergarten Rocks: at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and 15, incoming kindergarten students only. Starting school is exciting. Starting kindergarten is more than exciting. It Rocks. School is starting soon and for kindergartners the fun is about to begin. Celebrate this big step with stories, songs, dancing and snacks. Registration required.

The Mr. Freeze Cryogenic Show: 2 p.m. Aug. 25. Learn from super cool Fermilab scientist “Mr. Freeze” about the fascinating field of supercooling cryogenics. All ages/family. Tickets will be available beginning Aug. 19, on a first come, first serve basis to Morton Grove Public Library cardholders. Any remaining tickets will be made available to the general public on the day of the event.

Language Stars Presents: A Foreign Language Learning Adventure at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 16. Experts from Language Stars present a fun introduction to a new foreign language each week. Join them for one week or sign up for them all. For ages 4-8. Registration required.

Drop-In Classes

Crafty Saturday: Stop by between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 11. Drop in to the YS department to make a seasonal craft while supplies last.

Monday Morning Playgroup: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays. Tots of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to gather at the Library to meet new friends, play, and have lots of fun in the Activity Room.

Listen Up! (All Ages): 10-11 a.m. Tuesdays. Stories, songs and crafts for preschool children and their caregivers.

Wee Read: Lapsit (infant-24 months) 11 a.m. to noon Fridays; and 10-11 a.m. on each third Saturday. Babies and caregivers are invited to hear songs and stories and enjoy playtime.

Civic

The Solid Waste Agency: of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) offers an At Home Pickup Program for those who prefer to have their materials picked up from the front steps rather than drive to a drop-off location. This program will be available through September. Any SWANCC resident who has front door access (no apartments or condos) can arrange for a pickup. Residents are charged $30 via credit card to offset program costs, and can recycle six items per pickup. A list of acceptable items is available at http://swancc.org/index.php/programs/electronics-recycling. No individual item can exceed 50 pounds and televisions are limited to 27 inches. The Solid Waste Agency: of Northern Cook County, has a composting demonstration system at its Glenview Transfer Station. Several types of backyard bins are featured for educators and residents to learn the science behind mixing yard waste. The next workshop will be held Aug. 11 at the Glenview Transfer Station, 1151 N. The Solid Waste Agency: of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) has recently updated its web-based reference to include an expanded General Resources Section and other areas of sustainability such as: Appliances and Electronics; Energy Conservation; Home Reuse, Deconstruction and Salvage; Indoor Air Quality; Natural Lawn Care; Travel and Transportation and Water Conservation. The Solid Waste Agency: of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) established a Battery Recycling Program for rechargeable and alkaline batteries. Common household batteries are no longer accepted at Illinois EPA-sponsored household chemical waste events and facilities. Batteries accepted includes: Alkaline: AA, AAA, C, D and 9V; and Rechargeables: NiCd, NiMh, lithium ion, lithium polymer. The Solid Waste Agency: of Northern Cook County has established a location for residents to drop off electronics on a weekly basis at no cost at the Glenview Transfer Station, 1151 N. River Road, 9-11:30 a.m. Saturdays; and Winnetka Public Works, 1390 Willow Road, 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and 1-3 p.m. Thursdays. Special Exhibition: Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America will be displayed through Jan. 6. How should the United States balance civil liberties and individual rights during times of conflict, crisis and fear? Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America, a creation of the International Spy Museum, explores this vital question through video, film, interactive displays and artifacts, offering an unprecedented perspective into the stories of espionage, treason, and deception that Americans have contended with since the founding days of the republic. At interactive stations following the themes of the exhibition — revolution, sabotage, hate, radicalism, world war, subversion, protest, extremism, and terrorism — visitors will be able to record their opinions on issues of national security and civil liberties and compare their reactions to those of past Gallup polling results. Veterans History Project: applications are being accepted by The Morton Grove Historical Museum. Patriots of all families are invited participate in this endeavor. Veterans, or those sharing the history of a relative, friend or neighbor who is with us or has passed on are also invited. Veterans’ donations of photographs, documents, as well as artifacts from local veterans are sought to honor and preserve their memories. Through the Veterans Voices oral history project, those interested in sharing their stories of military service to be recorded, archived and used in a variety of multi-media presentations are also sought.

CJE SeniorLife: is working with senior citizens and families across the Chicago area through its home safety assessments program to help spot possible safety hazards in the home. Through the service, a Certified Aging in-Place Specialist (CAPS) comes out to the home to discuss changes that may help the resident remain in their house longer. CAPS walks through the residence and presents a list of suggested modifications, repairs and preventative safety measures, and also provides a list of available resources for making the changes. CJE SeniorLife: is now accepting applications for Robineau Residence, 7550 N. Kostner Ave., in Skokie, for immediate move-in. The age requirement for residency is 55. In addition, the income level for a single occupant was raised to $42,100 per year. Robineau is designed to serve senior citizens who may need a helping hand. Applicants should qualify for subsidized housing under the provisions of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 8 program. An additional monthly service fee is required. Scholarships

Variety of Illinois: invites interested athletes ages 8 to 21, who are passionately pursuing dreams of athletic glory, to apply to the Live to Achieve Program for a $1,000 grant. Applications can be downloaded from Variety of Illinois’ website at varietyofillinois.org. For print copies, call Variety at (312) 822-0660, and an application will be mailed. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Applicants will be notified by mail of Variety of Illinois’ decision, which will take into account overall personality and goals of the applicant, not just sheer athletic talent. Applicants are eligible to receive one Live to Achieve grant per calendar year.

NorthShore: University HealthSystem Hospice is seeking compassionate people to visit terminally ill patients and families on the North Shore by providing companionship, relief for caregivers, run errands, provide transportation and more. Local families needed: for Cultural Exchange Students ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE), in cooperation with local high schools, is seeking local families to host boys and girls between ages 15 to 18 from countries around the world. Students are enthusiastic in practicing English and experience American culture. They will also share their own culture with host families, not as a guest, but as a family member. Additionally, students have pocket money for personal expenses; and full health, accident and liability insurance. CJE SeniorLife: is in need of more volunteers for its Home Delivered Meals program in the north side of Chicago, Evanston, Skokie, and Morton Grove areas. Hot and cold meals are delivered weekdays from 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Volunteers work in teams of two, where one person drives his/her car with the other person delivering the meals to the client’s door. Volunteers can choose one or two weekdays on a regular basis to deliver meals or assist as their schedule permits.
