MGPL pick of the week: ”The Hollow Crown” mini series on DVD.

Why it’s the pick of the week:  The TV film adaptations of the Henriad Tetralogy elegantly capture the drama and stateliness of Shakespeare’s medieval English royalty.

These BBC productions—spanning historical plays Richard II, Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2, and Henry V—were originally shown in the UK as a part of the “Cultural Olympics” in 2012, which highlighted the best and brightest of English culture in preparation for the London Olympic games.  Produced by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, they bring together the best of British talent both behind the scenes and on screen.

Ben Whishaw stars as Richard II, an arrogant and fey king, who is overthrown by his banished cousin Bolingbroke.  The first of these episodes sees his downfall and the rise of Bolingbroke, who would become Henry IV.  In the following two episodes, Jeremy Irons is the haunted Henry IV, struggling with threats to his reign and the immature behavior of his son and heir, Prince Hal.  Tom Hiddleston plays Hal as he transitions to King Henry V, and the final play sees him lead England into battle with France.

These oft-overlooked history plays have been brought richly to life as TV movies—on a scale perhaps larger than they’ve ever been before.  Each production is filled with distinguished actors—in addition to the three kings (Whishaw, Irons, and Hiddleston), the series features a great supporting cast in Simon Russell Beale, Julie Walters, Rory Kinnear, Patrick Stewart, and John Hurt.  They give much-lauded performances and bring Shakespeare’s stories of power, betrayal, and family conflict to life for a modern audience.  It was also recently announced that a second series of The Hollow Crown will be made, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Richard III.

MGPL will be showing the final film of this series, “Henry V,” at the library on Tuesday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m.
